THE APPRAISAL PROCESS
Why should you get your jewelry appraised?
A jewelry appraisal is an official documentation of your jewelry’s monetary value, and it’s important to have one for a number of reasons. First, appraisals are vital for insurance purposes. In the unfortunate event that your jewelry is ever lost, damaged or stolen, your insurance company will need an appraisal to assist you with your claim.
Knowing your jewelry’s value also gives you a clearer understanding of your own assets. It may be important for estate planning, tax purposes, or in other situations where your accurate financial information is necessary.
Finally, an appraisal offers a detailed record of what your jewelry looks like. It will include your jewelry’s measurements, written descriptions of its appearance, and information on the metals, diamonds or gemstones used in the piece. If you should ever need (or want) to recreate your jewelry, a custom jeweler can use the appraisal information to help design the piece.
What happens during a jewelry appraisal?
During a jewelry appraisal, our expert gemologist will identify and evaluate the precious metals, diamonds and gemstones in your jewelry. He will then write an official, authentic document outlining the specifications of your jewelry and declaring its monetary value. You can then submit that document to an insurer to cover your jewelry.
How often should you have your jewelry appraised?
You should have your jewelry appraised at least once every five years. The market values of diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals are constantly changing. Waiting too long between appraisals could leave you underinsured.
How much does jewelry appraisal cost?
Jewelry appraisal costs $150 for each item, or $450 per hour for a collective value on estate jewelry.
How long does jewelry appraisal take?
An appraisal can be written in about one week. You will have to leave your jewelry with us as we complete a thorough analysis and valuation. If you are more comfortable with a same-day appraisal, we bring our gemologist onsite quarterly for “Appraisal Day.” You can follow us on social media to find out when our next Appraisal Day will take place.
